13.5. Diagnostics of malfunctions of steering transfer

General information
As violations in steering affect several systems, it is necessary to take all these systems into account when diagnosing malfunctions. Not to be misled by false symptoms, it is necessary to carry out road tests of the car always at first.

General diagnostics
Check the amplifier of steering for existence of leaks. Also check the level of working liquid of the amplifier of steering and a tension of a driving belt of the pump.

The steering wheel turns hardly
– Hydraulic system – by means of the manometer carry out an inspection of pressure in system.
– Adjustment of preliminary loading of steering transfer is broken.
– Jamming or jamming of steering transfer.
– Fastening of steering transfer is weakened.

Excessive ease at turn of a steering wheel
– Bearings of wheels are worn-out or weakened.
– Fastening of steering transfer is weakened.
– Connections of a steering column with steering transfer are weakened or worn-out.
– Adjustment of preliminary loading of steering transfer is broken.

The steering wheel badly comes back to a starting position
– There is not enough lubricant in spherical hinged connections and tips of steering drafts.
– Jamming of spherical hinged connections.
– Jamming in a steering column.
– Alignment of forward wheels is broken.
– Adjustment of preliminary loading of steering transfer is broken.
– Jamming of the valve.
– The coupling on steering transfer is too low installed.

Course instability or low stability of the steering mechanism
– Inappropriate or different tires.
– There is not enough lubricant in spherical hinged connections and tips of steering drafts.
– Shock-absorbers of racks are worn-out.
– The stabilizer of cross stability is weakened.
– Springs are broken or weakened.

Inefficient operation of the amplifier of steering
– Adjustment of preliminary loading of steering transfer is broken.
– Wrong angles of installation of forward or back wheels.

Withdrawal of the car when braking
– Bearings of wheels are worn-out or have a big side play.
– Springs are broken or weakened.
– Leak in the wheel cylinder or a support.
– Deformation of brake disks and drums.

Return of a steering wheel
– Air in system.
– Fastening of steering transfer is weakened.
– Connections of a steering column with steering transfer are weakened or worn-out.
– The tip of steering draft is worn-out.
– Bearings of wheels are worn-out or have a big side play.

Breakthroughs or pushes of a steering wheel
– Hydraulic system – by means of the manometer carry out an inspection of pressure in system.
– The slowed-down operation of the drive.
– The pump drive belt tension is weakened.

Diagnostics of malfunctions in power rack transmission of the steering mechanism

The hissing noise
During the operation of the amplifier of steering there is always an insignificant noise. The hissing sound which is not irritating the driver which is heard when the steering wheel is turned on the standing car is most widespread. Also this noise is most susceptible at turn of a steering wheel when braking. This sound proceeds from hydraulic liquid under pressure. Between this noise and operation of the steering mechanism there is no communication.

       PREVENTION
Do not replace the valve if the "hissing" noise not too strong. The new valve also publishes insignificant noise and is not always the solution of this problem.

The rattling noise or sounds of blows
– The hose under pressure concerns the case.
– Fastening of steering drafts is weakened.
– Fastening of steering transfer is weakened.
– Adjustment of preliminary loading of steering transfer is broken.

Bad return of a steering wheel to the center
– Wrong angles of installation of forward wheels.
– Bearings of wheels are worn-out or have a big side play.
– Connections of a steering column with steering transfer are weakened or worn-out.
– Jamming of steering draft.
– Jamming of spherical hinged connections.
– Friction of a steering wheel about a casing.
– Jamming or damage of bearings of a steering shaft.
– Adjustment of steering transfer is broken.
– Jamming or jamming of the valve of steering transfer.
– Friction of consolidation of a shaft of a steering column about a shaft.

Instant growth of effort at bystry turn of a wheel
– Strong internal leaks.

Breakthroughs or pushes of a steering wheel at turn with the working engine (especially at the parking)
– The insufficient pressure of liquid created by the pump.
– Jamming of the valve of steering transfer.
– Air in system.

Excessive return of a wheel or excessively easy taxing
– Air in system.
– Connections of steering transfer are weakened.
– Connections of a column with steering transfer are weakened.
– Fastening of steering drafts is weakened.
– Bearings of wheels are worn-out or have a big side play.
– Adjustment of preliminary loading of steering transfer is broken.

Difficulty of management of steering or its bad functioning (especially at the parking)
– Connections of a column with steering transfer are weakened.
– Jamming of the valve of steering transfer.
– The insufficient pressure of liquid created by the pump.
– Strong internal leakages of the pump.
– Strong internal leaks.
– The pump drive belt tension is weakened.

Diagnostics of the pump of the amplifier of steering
Formation of foam, increase in viscosity of liquid of the amplifier of steering, low level of liquid and possible low pressure
It can be caused by availability of air in liquid and loss of liquid in connection with the internal leak in the pump causing a liquid overflowing. Check for existence of leaks and eliminate them. Remove air from the hydraulic drive of the amplifier of steering.

       PREVENTION
Very low temperatures cause formation of vials of air in the hydraulic drive of the amplifier of steering if liquid level very low.

– Remove the pump from the car and check the case and a cap for existence of leaks.
– Check for existence of internal leaks in the pump.
– Remove air from the hydraulic drive of the amplifier of steering.

Low pressure in connection with malfunctions of the pump
– The control valve got stuck or does not work.
– Press the disk does not lie on a cam washer.
– The cam washer is strongly worn-out.
– Scratches on a press disk, a persistent plate or a rotor.
– Blades get stuck in rotor grooves.
– A persistent plate or press cracks have a disk or are broken.
– Strong internal leak.

Low pressure in connection with malfunctions of steering transfer
– Scratches on the internal surface of the case.
– Leak at rings or consolidations of the valve.

The rolling noise in the pump of the amplifier of steering
– The excessive return pressure in hoses or steering transfer caused their perezhatiy.
– Scratches on press disks, a persistent plate or a rotor.
– The cam washer is worn-out.

The howling noise in the pump of the amplifier of steering
– Air in liquid.
– Low level of liquid.
– Fastening of the pump weakened.

The rattling noise in the pump of the amplifier of steering
– Blades get stuck in rotor grooves.
– The blade is installed incorrectly.
– Damage of the ball bearing.

The whistling noise in the pump of the amplifier of steering
– The control valve is damaged.

The howling noise in the pump of the amplifier of steering
– Scratches on a pump shaft.
– Scratches on press disks and blades.

System of blocking of a steering shaft

There is no unblocking of a steering shaft
– The lock bolt is damaged.
– The ignition switch cylinder is damaged.
– The casing is damaged.

The steering shaft is not blocked
– The ignition switch cylinder is damaged.
– An agnail on a lock bolt.
– The casing is damaged.
– The ignition switch is jammed

Big effort when blocking a steering shaft
– The ignition switch cylinder is damaged.
– The ignition switch is damaged.
– A big gap between a casing and a cover.
– The coupling groove in a lath is damaged.
– The adjusting bracket of the switch of ignition is bent.

The key gets stuck in situation "Start"

The key is not taken out in situation "off"
– The switch of ignition is incorrectly installed.
– The ignition switch cylinder is damaged.

Steering column

Noise in a column
– The hinges connecting a steering column to steering transfer are weakened.
– The column is incorrectly established.
– There is not enough lubricant in bearings.
– The bearing of the lower or top part of a steering shaft is worn-out or broken.
– The lock ring of a shaft is not established into place.
– The spherical hinge is not greased.

Big effort at the movement of a steering shaft
– The column is incorrectly established.
– Dustproof consolidation is incorrectly established or deformed.
– The top or lower bearing is damaged.
– Deflection of a casing of a steering column.
– Jamming of the universal hinge of a steering shaft.

Gap in a steering column
– Bolts of fastening of the top and lower brackets of the switch of ignition to a column are weakened.
– Welded nuts on a casing are broken.
– The capsule of the moment of ignition of the top bracket is cut off.
– Basic screws are weakened.
– Bolts of fastening of the top and lower brackets to a column casing are weakened.
– Screws of fastening of the lower bracket to the adapter and the bearing assembled are weakened.
– Bolts of fastening of the switch of ignition to a casing are weakened.

The casing rubs about a tank
– It is bent or is not coaxial with a nave.
– The cover of a casing and a cover of the end of a casing are established incorrectly.

The steering wheel is weakened
– Too big gap between openings in a support or a casing.
– The top bearing is not put in a casing.
– Basic screws are weakened.

Noise at an inclination of a steering column
– The top inclined emphasis is worn-out.
– The inclined spring rubs in a casing.

 Turn signal switch
This diagnostics covers only mechanical damages.

The signal of turn does not remain in the provision of turn
– Alien material or the weakened details hinder the movement of a cross-piece.
– The lock or compensating spring is broken or is absent.
– If there is no above, remove and check the switch.

The signal of turn is not disconnected
– Bolts of fastening of the switch are weakened.
– Naves of the switch or an anchor are broken.
– It is broken, is absent or the lock, returnable or compensating spring is not in the place.
– The compensating cam is worn-out.

Difficulty of actuating of a signal of turn
– The turn signal switch lever is weakened.
– The cross-piece is broken or damaged.
– Springs are weakened or are not in the place.
– Alien details and/or material.
– Bolts of fastening of the switch of turn are weakened.

The signal of turn does not show change of a lane
– A clamping sled of change of a lane or an arm of a spring are broken.
– It is broken, is absent or the spring of change of a lane is not in the place.
– If there is no aforesaid, replace the turn signal switch.

The control lamp of a signal of turn does not light up
– The breaker of the index of turns and the alarm light system does not work.
– Badly the turn signal switch works.
– Connection between a body and a column is weakened.
– Electric malfunction.

The lamp of the indicator of a signal of turn is included, but does not blink
– The breaker of the index of turns and the alarm system does not work.
– Connection between a body and a column is weakened.
– The turn signal switch does not work.
To define whether really the switch of a signal of turn works, replace with the new switch of a signal of turn in network and include manually. If headlights of the car normally work, replace the turn signal switch.

Forward or back indexes of turn do not blink
– The lamp of the index of turn fused or is damaged.
– High resistance of "grounding" at the boss of a lamp.
– Connection between a body and a column is weakened.
– The switch of the index of turn does not work.

Indexes of turn blink very slowly
– Connection between a body and a column is weakened.
– Malfunction in a plait of wires of a body.

Ignition switch

Ignition does not work
– The ignition switch is jammed or damaged.
– The ignition switch socket is weakened.

The switch does not turn
– The ignition switch is damaged.

Switch of driving and passing beam of headlights

There is no driving or passing beam
– The socket of the switch of driving and passing beam of headlights is weakened.
– Wrong adjustment of light of headlights.
– Internal damage or wear of the switch.
– Malfunction in a plait of wires of a body.

 Screen wiper switch lever

The switch does not work in the "slow", "bystry" or "washer" mode
– The socket between the case and the switch is weakened.
– The switch is broken or damaged.
